Here are some interesting facts about Ceylon/Sri Lanka's postal history:
* Ceylon (present-day Sri Lanka) has a postal history dating back to 1798 (just two years after Britain occupied the island's coastal regions) when post offices were established in the towns of Jaffna, Mannar, Trincomalee, Colombo and Galle.
* The first mail coach service in Asia was inaugurated in Ceylon in 1836. The service linked Colombo and Kandy.
* The first postage stamp was issued in 1857, a 6d purple-brown imperforate which the Stanley Gibbons catalogue values at £7500 (unused) and £450 (used).
